What is Life Coaching?

Coaching is 'a collaborative, solution-focused, results orientated and systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of work, performance, life experience, self-directed learning and personal growth' (Grant, 2000).

Coaching facilitates improvements in performance and life by challenging, empowering and developing individuals.

A coach can be compared to someone giving you directions over the phone... the coach can help you find different ways to get from ‘a’ to ‘b’ and to navigate your way around obstacles, but as the driver you have to select the best route for you and recognise landmarks along the way to reach your desired destination.

What are the key benefits of coaching?

One of the key things that coaching can help with is to ensure that who you are and why you do what you do is reflected in your values. The Little Oxford Dictionary defines values as ‘principles or standards, one’s judgement of what is valuable or important in life’.

We often assume things make us happy but when they don’t we should find a reason why. Going back to the drawing board means you are put back in touch with your true values, which are the key to discovering what you really want and more importantly what you need.

Also if your goals are not in alignment with your values you are less likely to achieve them and more likely to make excuses due to lack of motivation. Research shows that people, who set goals are wealthier, have better health and enjoy better relationships.

What is the difference between coaching and counselling?

The aim of counselling is usually to understand the root cause of longer term issues and emphasis is on the ‘problem’, e.g. what causes you to avoid relationships? In contrast, coaching focuses on goal-based objectives and ‘solutions’, e.g. what do you want instead?

It focuses on how to get something we want but don’t currently have and how to deal with problems that are preventing us from reaching our goals and being happy and successful. Coaching assumes that clients are psychologically healthy with no underlying psychological problems to hold them back from making progress towards their goals.

Coaching is being offered by many different organisations and individuals who vary in quality. Within this rapidly growing industry there are also many professional bodies and associations.
