Overcoming limiting beliefs
A common theme amongst NLP and CBT Therapy is ensuring limiting beliefs are not holding you back. When Coaching uncovers limiting beliefs that affect your attitude, outlook and behaviour I will...
- Challenge these
- Help you to replace them with more positive beliefs
- Empower you to identify more choices and new behaviours to help you take control of your life and achieve your goals
An alternative to Hypnotherapy
NLP and CBT Therapy can be used as an alternative to Hypnotherapy as it also produces rapid benefits. People who do not want to be hypnotised but are looking for a similar brief therapy, which can be experienced in a fully awake state, may favour this over Hypnotherapy.
I will work with you to...
- Define your goals
- Increase your awareness of your internal resources/skills
- Identify how you can build on these resources, strengthen and develop them
This approach is unique because it...
- Uses the the most effective aspects of talking therapies to help you progress towards your goals quickly
- Provides you with simple tried and tested psychological techniques to help you make speedy progress towards your goals after just one session
- Facilitates improvements in performance and life by developing, empowering and challenging you
- Increases self awareness through drawing attention to what you say, how you use verbal and non-verbal language to say this and your behaviour
- Empowers you to take a step back and gain a new perspective of past experiences
- Taps into and builds on your internal resources
- Helps you pin down how you can use your resources to achieve your goals
- Empowers you to create the person you want to be
- Positively changes the way you think about the future
The solution focused part...
A big part of solution focused therapy is beginning with the end in mind. The habit of 'Beginning with the End in Mind' was introduced by Dr. Stephen R. Covey in his bestseller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Covey explained: “Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.”
From the outset Solution Focused Coaching helps you...
- Identify who and what is important to you
- Develop a vision of a preferred future
- Find exceptions, strengths, and resources related to that vision
‘Create new possibilities and solutions’
Another major part of Solution Focused Coaching is talking about solutions to provide clients with new solution focused insights. As Steve de Shazer stated:
“Problem talk creates problems; solution talk creates solutions”
Based on this there are two major principles:
- There are no problems… only opportunities.
- There is not just one solution (one truth), there are thousands of solutions
Another major principle: there are no failures, only "learning".
- If it works, don’t fix it
- Do more of what works.
- If it doesn’t work: don’t do it again; and do something different.
What is NLP and how do you use it?
NLP is “a set of guiding principles, attitudes and techniques that enable you to change behaviour patterns as you wish.”
I draw upon these principles and attitudes and use simple NLP techniques such as:
- Future pacing
- The power of visualisation
- Cognitive reframing
- Circle of excellence
- NLP anchoring techniques
- The swish technique
- Creating resource states
- Overcoming self sabotage
- NLP modelling
Why NLP?
NLP is about taking control of your brain and behavior to achieve the results that you want in life.
Most athletes would agree that winning in sports is more than simply being athletically the best. It is also about winning the mind game.
For example, before Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile, most runners thought that it was not possible to run a mile in under 4 minutes. However after he broke the record, many other people have also run the 4 minute mile. So the question is, what changed?
One major factor that changed was the belief that it was possible or not. Beliefs can limit or they can empower people - your beliefs in your ability or what is possible will determine your results.
NLP offers many useful techniques that can help people perform better. One area is in helping to change limiting beliefs and creating empowering beliefs that will positively impact performance.
CBT Therapy
CBT therapy is one of the most popular talking therapies and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). It is extremely effective for treating issues such as depression, anxiety, low mood, self esteem, stress and anger. It can help you to:
- Gain new insights
- Get a better understanding of your response to particular situations
- Identify repetitive and unhelpful behaviour patterns
- Strengthen your ability to change
As you gain insight, you will find that you can choose to react differently, to experiment with new and more positive behaviours.
CBT Therapy is based on the notion that our beliefs (about ourselves, the world and other people) influence our behaviour. These beliefs may be deep below the surface and only accessible through identifying unhelpful self talk.
The good news is that if we can be aware of what is going on in our minds we can influence our emotions and behaviour. Research shows that CBT Therapy can help you tap into what is going through our mind in situations where you would like to react differently.
How quickly will I get results using Solution Focused Coaching, NLP and CBT Therapy?
- I always aim to help clients get results even after just one session
- Using this approach can effectively address specific issues in three to six sessions
- Six or more sessions may be required for more deep rooted issues
- Coaching combined with Hypnotherapy may be more appropriate for deeper issues
Can Solution Focused Coaching with NLP and CBT Therapy be used in combination with Hypnotherapy?
For more deep rooted issues I often recommend Hypnotherapy as a follow up to Solution Focused Coaching with NLP and CBT Therapy. The free initial consultation and self assessment package are designed to establish whether this combination of therapies are most suitable for you.
Coaching is a really useful starting point as it can help you redefine what success looks like for you. Depending on your definition of success, goals can be set to increase commitment and motivation for change. In addition barriers to success can be identified.
For Hypnotherapy to be as successful as possible it is crucial to take into account all of these things as well as other information revealed through Coaching, so that Hypnotherapy can be tailored accordingly. Also Coaching can be used to build on positive changes made through Hypnotherapy by forming a short to long-term plan of action to maintain this.
Follow up Coaching sessions ensure that you keep momentum and follow your plan of action enabling you to reach your goals whatever they may be.
